WHY WE'RE FUNDRAISING WITH THE JIMMY FUND WALK TO FIGHT CANCER

Dr. Matthew Yurgelun is a medical oncologist at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, working in the Gastrointestinal Cancer Center and the Center for Cancer Genetics and Prevention. He treats patients with gastrointestinal cancers and patients at high risk of developing cancer. He has a special interest in studying inherited gastrointestinal cancer syndromes such as Lynch Syndrome. His work is dedicated to developing better screening, early detection, and prevention methods of cancer so we may take a more proactive approach in preventing cancer or catching it early when there is the highest likelihood of survival.

Dr. Yurgelun’s discoveries have resulted in major contributions to the field, including:

·         10% of all pancreatic cancer diagnoses are driven by a hereditary gene (Genetics in Medicine, 2018) which led to updating the National Guidelines (NCCN) that all pancreatic cancer patients should receive genetic testing

·         10% of all colorectal cancer diagnoses are driven by a hereditary gene (Journal of Clinical Oncology, 2017)

·         BRCA 1 & 2 genes are prevalent in pancreatic and colorectal cancers

Dr. Yurgelun is the Director of the Lynch Syndrome Center – the first of its kind in the world. The Center is fully devoted to improving care for patients with Lynch syndrome and aims 1) to educate and increase awareness of Lynch syndrome among healthcare providers and in the greater community, 2) to diagnose, treat and counsel families at risk for Lynch syndrome associated cancers, and 3) to conduct innovative research to elevate understanding of Lynch syndrome and develop new treatment and prevention strategies.

Your philanthropy will fuel Dr. Yurgelun’s work to change the battle plan against cancer from reactive treatment to proactive prevention. Thank you for your generosity.
