WHY WE'RE FUNDRAISING WITH THE JIMMY FUND WALK TO FIGHT CANCER

Dr. McCleary is a clinical innovator in oncology focused on implementation of new digital, clinical, informatics applications to improve patient outcomes, quality of life, and patient survival as well as clinical efficiency. She is a medical oncologist in the Gastrointestinal Cancer Center and Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School. She currently leads the Patient Reported Data Program at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI). Dr. McCleary presented an overview of her research in DFCI’s Equity in Cancer Care webinar.

Dr. Nadine McCleary thanks you for supporting her research in Patient Reported Data – harnessing the patient’s voice throughout their cancer journey to:

  • improve patient outcomes and extend survival
  • improve the patient experience and quality of life
  • decrease treatment interruptions
  • increase access to institutional resources

Dr. McCleary has launched several initiatives leveraging technology to collect, implement, and capitalize on patient reported data across the cancer care continuum, including:

SURGE: Supporting UnderRepresented minorities in Genomics-based cancer trial Enrollment
Who: Black, Latinx, & Older adults at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) Carney Hospital, St. Elizabeth’s
Why? Historical underrepresentation of patients in clinical trials limits access to novel therapies, paradoxically worsening outcomes as therapies improve
Objective: Increase underrepresented minority (URM) patient readiness for enrollment and clinical trials and connect patients with genomic testing to remove barriers to clinical trial access
Potential Impact: Increase genomic sequencing testing rates; Increase awareness of clinical trials as part of cancer care; Increase precision clinical trial matching for historically underrepresented populations

REACH: Resilience and Equity in Aging, Cancer, and Health
Who: New patients 70 years or older seen in gastrointestinal oncology at DFCI – will goal to expand to other disease centers with additional funding
Why? Older adults have the highest prevalence of cancer but are less likely to receive standard care or participate in cancer clinical trials and experience more emergency department (ED) visits and hospitalizations during care
Objective: Assess baseline physical/cognitive/functional fitness of older adults; Provide support of geriatric consultation and care coordination
Potential Impact: Reduce interruptions to cancer care (ED visits, hospitalizations), improve transitions in care, improve access to appropriate treatment

RESOURCE: Routine Evaluation of Social determinants of health in Oncology: User-informed Resource Coordination and Engagement
Who: New patients at DFCI who have indicated potential social determinants of health (SDoH) needs or who are of a subset of patients with potentially elevated risk
Why? Transportation, Housing, Food, Financial security greatly impact patient experience of cancer care
Objective: Screen patients for SDoH needs and connect them with DFCI resources earlier and without the need for provider intervention
Potential Impact: Reduce unplanned interruptions to cancer care due to unmet SDoH needs

eSYM: Electronic Symptom Managements
Who: all DFCI patients
Why? Leveraging patient reported data throughout treatment, symptom management, and survivorship improves quality of life and outcomes
Objective: Collect patients symptoms, concerns, preferences, etc. across the cancer care continuum to improve care and survival
Potential Impact: improve quality of life, survival, treatment, and decrease hospitalization and treatment interruptions

Philanthropy is leveraged to obtain additional funding for these research programs. Your gift will directly support Dr. McCleary’s innovative research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and provide an invaluable resource to the fight against cancer. Thank you for your thoughtful generosity.
