WHY WE'RE FUNDRAISING WITH THE JIMMY FUND WALK TO FIGHT CANCER

Thank you for visiting the Program for Older Adults with Breast Cancer page.

The Program for Older Adults with Breast Cancer seeks to provide personalized, supportive care that addresses the unique needs of older adults and their caregivers.  It is integrated with state-of-the-art, team-based, patient-centered medical care and aims to optimize the care and the quality of life of our older patients.

Breast cancer is an aging disease and is most common among older women, with half of all breast cancer cases occurring in women over the age of 60.  As people are now living longer than ever, we anticipate that we will see an increasing number of older adults develop breast cancer.  Older patients, however, are under-represented in clinical research, and their unique needs are not well understood.  Our program aims to change that.  We currently have multiple clinical trials designed specifically for older patients, so that we may better understand and serve these patients.

The Program for Older Adults with Breast Cancer is inspired by the vision and passion of Rachel Freedman, MD, MPH, a medical oncologist in the Breast Oncology Program in the Susan F. Smith Center for Women's Cancers at Dana-Farber.  In addition to caring for patients, Dr. Freedman conducts clinical research to understand and address disparities in breast cancer treatment and outcomes for aging, minority and vulnerable patient populations.  Dr. Freedman has a special interest in the unique needs of older adults and is the Medical Director of the Program for Older Adults with Breast Cancer.

As the Program for Older Adults with Breast Cancer grows, our goal is to provide complementary, wrap-around services that support older patients throughout their breast cancer journey.  With philanthropic support, we can achieve this goal and reach more patients.

Your gift will help advance supportive care and clinical research for our older patients with breast cancer.  Thank you!
