√MY PERSONAL STATEMENT–WHY I’M ASKING FOR YOUR SUPPORT:
Since 2010, I’ve had (plead chemo brain if I forget to list stuff) three regimes of inductive chemotherapy, two cycles of radiation, at least nine surgical procedures (including three lung excisions and two neurosurgeries), six years of maintenance (palliative) chemo (good cancer news), along with a range of side effects that defy one’s imagination. Now, I’ve graduated to the palliative trial & error stage–trying to find a new treatment that will effectively counter my cancer.
Please know that I’m grateful, feel well, feel happy, both content and sad about my future. DFCI prepares me for all eventualities. Acceptance frees me.
What opportunities have the skills and dedication of my DFCI/BWH medical team given me over these baker’s dozen of years?
I’ve watched our sons marry women we love and cherish, revel in the grace of a grandson, am blessed with 45 years together with my wife and best friend, feel and experience the love and support of family and friends. Have the opportunity to give back to new and peer cancer patients what was given to me–comfort, shared experience, a non-judgmental ear that welcomes venting (vent or you implode), a sense of community, of never feeling alone, never thinking that crazy visions playing in our minds are anything other than normal.
Then the trivial stuff: living on Sanibel Island, traveling to London and Paris, having seven collections of poetry published, winning the 2017 Frank O’Hara Prize for Poetry, having the thrill of performing live poetry from the stage.
THIS IS MY STORY. IMAGINE THOUSANDS OF OTHER STORIES—COMPELLING, HEARTWARMING, AND HEATBREAKING. THEN GIVE. MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN MANY LIVES.
Donors of $100 or more will receive a gift–your choice of my newest book or any other (see smallpoetatlarge.com for details.)
