About the Jimmy Fund and the Red Sox

The Jimmy Fund started in 1948, with a young boy, dubbed “Jimmy,” who loved baseball and had one wish: a TV so he could watch his favorite team, the Boston Braves, from his hospital room. Donations flooded in and the Jimmy Fund was born, to support care and research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. A few years later, the Boston Red Sox adopted the Jimmy Fund as their official charity, forming what would become one of the most unique, longstanding, and visible charitable relationships in the history of professional sports.

Over the years, Red Sox legends from Ted Williams to David Ortiz would show their support by visiting patients in Dana-Farber’s Jimmy Fund Clinic, with one player serving as the “Jimmy Fund Captain” each year. The Red Sox also generously donate their time and support through events hosted at Fenway Park, and provide special experiences for Dana-Farber patients. You can add your support to this longstanding partnership and join us to strike out cancer! Check out how you can get involved below. Together, we’re all Jimmy, and we can defy cancer.

THANKS TO OUR JIMMY FUND CAPTAIN!

Returning for his second year, our 2024 Jimmy Fund Captain is Red Sox pitcher Garrett Whitlock. In his first year as captain, Garrett helped encourage fans to step up to the plate and strike out cancer with the Jimmy Fund, while forming bonds with Dana-Farber patients of all ages. We are excited to see what year two has in store! Thank you to the entire Red Sox family for joining us to say: "We're all Jimmy!"

DESIGNATED HITTER: SHELBY

When Shelby, a registered nurse from Maine, was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer, she knew Dana-Farber was the place for treatment. “I never felt like a number. I always felt supported and cared about. Dana-Farber saved my life.”

Support also came from her family, hospital colleagues, and her “softball girls.” Five years ago, Shelby officially signed on as the “team mom.” She describes the time period from March to the end of August as “softball fever,” bonding with the players on the field, while traveling, and at team barbeques and swim parties. When not occupied with the softball team, Shelby enjoys taking road trips to Fenway Park with her husband and two daughters to cheer on the Boston Red Sox.
