I embarked on my first marathon journey back in 2005 with the Dana Farber Marathon Challenge Team in Boston. It was a life-changing experience that ignited my passion for running. Since 2005 I have completed 10 full marathons and numerous half marathons, 10Ks and 5Ks.
My decision to lace up my running shoes once again with DFMC is deeply rooted in my friendship with Dee Tomkiewicz. Dee and I shared an incredible friendship with one another, along with our core group of friends – the Nine - for over 25 years. The Nine “grew up” together, we watched one another experience so many wonderful memories, from graduating high school and college, to our first real “jobs,” getting married, starting families, traveling, and so much more. We also have always been there for one another during the challenging times, one of the hardest being Dee's Stage 4 Ovarian Cancer diagnosis.
Dee never let the disease get in her way. She was a remarkable person who lived every moment to the fullest, she started a family, traveled the world, and was always ready to say yes to the next adventure. Dee's resilience, unwavering spirit, and the tireless efforts of the doctors, researchers, scientists, and staff at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute made it possible for her to live a vibrant life alongside her family and friends. After an 8-year battle, she passed away peacefully on August 21, 2023.
The Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge directs 100 percent of funds raised to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's Claudia Adams Barr Program in Innovative Basic Cancer Research. This program enables scientists at the leading edge of discovery to achieve better cure rates and to enhance patients' quality of life.
