This April, I will be running the Boston Marathon for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in memory of my childhood best friend, Elizabeth Schickel, who lost her battle to brain cancer at 15 years old in 2014. Dana-Farber provides essential cancer treatment and support, and it is where Elizabeth first began her oncology and radiation treatments. Their care and compassion during Elizabeth's illness left a lasting impression on me, and I am honored to support Dana-Farber knowing the incredible difference this organization makes.
Elizabeth’s memory fuels every step of this marathon. She is one of the most extraordinary people I’ve ever known, amazing in so many ways. She was a great athlete, and an even fiercer competitor, someone whose spirit was as strong as her love for running. She was always the fastest on the field, with a feisty energy and an infectious joy that was palpable. On a deeper level though, she was a sister, a friend, a daughter, and a confidant of astounding faith and compassion. Even in her last days, when she was too sick to walk, she still thought of others first. Once, when she saw a runner from the car window, she shed tears, not for herself, but because "I’m just glad other people can still enjoy running.”
I am running to honor her courage, her kindness, and the fight she never gave up.
Supporting Dana-Farber is a way to give back to the organization that cared for Elizabeth, to help others facing cancer, and to continue Elizabeth’s legacy. Your donations will directly support Dana-Farber’s lifesaving programs and help others fighting cancer find the same hope and strength that Elizabeth embodied. Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a difference. If you are unable to donate, please consider sharing Elizabeth’s story with friends and family. Thank you for being part of this journey with me.
With love and gratitude,
Margaret
