Laura was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016. She was a devoted mother and loving wife. We believed at the time, her cancer was caught early and was very treatable. She would assure us, “Plenty of people get breast cancer and it is very survivable. I will be just fine.” For almost 3 years it seemed that was the case. We thought Laura was cancer free after her first bout. However, in 2019 our family was devastated to discover that was simply not the case. Her cancer had spread to her bones, and later would spread to her liver and brain. For two very trying years, she battled the cancer with courage and conviction. No matter how difficult her personal battle was, she always put that aside and lived in the moment. No matter how difficult her struggle was, she always put our family first. She gave us some wonderful holidays. Candy hearts and heartfelt cards on Valentine’s day, baskets at Easter, and passing down family recipes at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Each day, she would inspire us with her focus on family and our wellbeing, showing us how brightly her love shined though despite her own struggle. On Friday October 29th 2021, Laura passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family and friends. To quote Norm MacDonald, “I’m pretty sure if you die, the cancer dies at the same time. That’s not a loss. That’s a draw.” Laura did not lose her battle to cancer, in fact we think she even won a couple of rounds. She hung in there until the final bell, something we can all admire.
Laura received excellent care from Dana-Farber. She would always come home and talk about how nice the nurses and staff were and always felt Dr. Hassett had her best interests in mind. Most importantly, she had the love and support of her immediate and extended family. Her husband Paul, and sons Rob, Trevor and Justin were by her side every step of the way. Laura was loved by friends and family alike, all of whom helped out in their own way. She truly enjoyed your friendship, and kindness. She appreciated the flowers that were frequently delivered, trips to have her nails done, sitting poolside and lakeside, company during walks, conversations in the back yard, dog visits, sister-in-law’s who made her comfortable in their homes, and the spiritual support provided by her mother. She was also grateful for the care she was given by family members during her times of struggle.
If willing, please donate in Laura’s memory to Dana-Farber for all the excellent care she received. They do tremendous work, and new treatments are always coming out. All donations are greatly appreciated.
