It is with a deep sense of loss that we celebrate the life of Dr. Rachael Smith, who passed away on her terms and with well-deserved peace. Our family, friends and community will deeply miss her, beautiful compassionate smile and tenacious spirit. Rachael braved a fight of a thousand women against cancer. Rachael was determined to live her life, each moment, each day, of each year to the fullest. Her children, Sidney and Daniel are who they are today and will continue to grow because of her determination to live, driven by her love for them. This Mother’s love was a shining example to shaping and nurturing her children. Rachael took comfort in knowing that they were maturing as compassionate, strong, and caring adults, who exuded her personality and independence. Her impact is real, and her incredible legacy will never be forgotten by the many lives that she touched and inspired. Her selfless acts of kindness will be remembered. Rach found her calling and followed her dream attending Dalhousie University-Medical School and advancing to become a Surgeon specializing in the precise science of Otolaryngology (ENT)medicine. She was amazing at what she did and her incredible abilities are reflected through the stories of the lives she changed. Her care and compassion were personal and individual as she always focused on her patients’ needs, no matter the time nor the circumstance. Rachael was a rock of support, and calming conversation with her was always a “judgement free zone”. She always made you feel safe and heard. Rachael exercised her skill as a partner with Hawthorn Medical Associates, Dartmouth, MA and St. Anne’s Hospital, Fall River, MA. It was here she developed her love and deep respect for her trusted team who she relied on daily and considered family. Neither hard times nor cancer would rob her of who she was - a mother, a wife, daughter, sister, an aunt, a friend, neighbor, and a surgeon. Throughout her life she modeled compassion and courage leaving memories that will serve to remind us of her remarkable and unrelenting kind spirit. Rachael was a warrior with the resilience and strength of many, and was powered by family, a legion of supporters and caregivers. Their neighborhood provided unwavering support, lovingly anticipating every need….It takes a village. The list is lengthy of friends, colleagues, care workers that were present during this unchosen journey. We would be remiss in not mentioning a special thank you to Dr. EJ Anderson, Dr Toni Choueiri, Dr. Jackie Tan and Dr. Mi Haisman who were always available to take a call, listen and guide these uncharted waters ensuring Rachael’s options were always available and her wishes were met. We are forever grateful to you all.
