Kelly was diagnosed with breast cancer February 2009, Seven years later, Metastatic Breast Cancer, February 2016. We learned patients do not die from breast cancer, they die from metastatic breast cancer. We learned Kelly’s expected “window” was 3 to 5 years. Kelly passed away at 4 years and 9 months. There is currently no cure for metastatic breast cancer.
Our moms, wives, daughters and sisters deserve more time with their loved ones. They need a bigger “window”: 7 years, 10 years, 15+ years. We learned 30% of breast cancer patients will be diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer, and less than 2% of breast cancer funding goes to metastatic research. We want to raise awareness and fund research to transform metastatic breast cancer from a terminal disease to a chronic one. We need help to do this.
Our family created this fund in Kelly’s name to always remember Kelly, her spirit and her kindness in a meaningful way to help others. We have chosen to support Nancy Lin, MD and her research focus on improving the outcomes of women living with metastatic breast cancer. Kelly’s fund will remain active as long as there are funds to be distributed. We hope the fund outlives us all.
