In October 2020, our mom, Andreana Grimaldo, was diagnosed with a form of brain cancer called Glioblastoma. Throughout her twenty-two month fight, our mom went through a surgical resection/craniotomy, three rounds of radiation and chemotherapy, and two clinical trials. Her dedication and positive attitude stayed with her throughout her fight.
Glioblastoma is a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer. Symptoms manifest in different ways depending on the location of the tumor in the brain. Glioblastoma is difficult to treat because of an anatomical barrier in the brain. Medications have a difficult time crossing this part of the brain to kill cancer cells without damaging healthy brain cells. Meaning, treatment can cause difficult and devastating side effects for the patient. Currently the average length of survival is 12-18 months.
We believe the reason our mother had twenty-two months of life after diagnosis is because of her care team. Her oncology care was directed by Dr. David Reardon a neuro-oncologist at Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
Dr. Reardon has dedicated his entire career to the care of glioblastoma patients and researching new treatment and therapies. His optimism and caring nature contributed to our mom’s trust and comfort with her healthcare team❤
