WHY WE'RE FUNDRAISING WITH THE JIMMY FUND WALK TO FIGHT CANCER
Today, a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, the 3rd leading cause of cancer deaths, is grim:
It's the only major cancer with a 5-year survival rate in the single digits, at only 8%, and only about 15% of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer survive for 1 year.
It's particularly difficult to treat, as the tumor forms a "shell," preventing chemotherapy drugs from entering and killing it.
The pancreas is located deep in the abdomen in an area with few nerves, so a lump or pain isn't felt until it is too late to operate, and the disease has metastasized to other organs.
Currently, there are no proven biomarkers or blood tests that could give an early indication of a pancreatic tumor.
Not only do I come from a "pancreatic cancer family" (5 close family members have died from this dreadful disease), but my husband Les was also diagnosedout of the blue with pancreatic cancer in June 2012 and died 4 1/2 months later.
Knowing this, I now participate in an annual pancreatic cancer early detection and screening program with Dr. Sapna Syngal & Dr. Leah Biller at Dana-Farber. I'm fine so far & hope to stay that way!
I'm proudly supporting Dr. Sapna Syngal and the multi-site GENERATE research program, involving genetic screening, early detection and prevention. If you have close family members who have had pancreatic cancer, click here to see if you qualify to participate.
Please join me in donating to Dr. Syngal's research!
Let's fight the good fight, provide HOPE and the possibility of survival!
