James Cleary, MD, PhD, is a Medical Oncologist at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute who specializes in treating gastrointestinal cancers. He is also an Instructor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.
Like many at Dana-Farber, Dr. Cleary splits his time between treating patients and conducting research. Dr. Cleary’s research focuses on finding new treatments for cancers that do not respond well to standard therapies. He investigates novel ways to target difficult to treat cancers and leads early phase clinical trials of new therapies.
Philanthropy is leveraged to obtain additional funding. For example, Dr. Cleary was the recipient of a grant from the Pancreatic Cancer Collective to grow more laboratory models of pancreatic cancer used for drug testing. Dr. Cleary and his team used philanthropic funding to launch this study and presented their preliminary data to the Pancreatic Cancer Collective, which in turn provided additional funding for the study. This is the primary way philanthropy accelerates research that positively impact patients at Dana-Farber.
