Thank you for visiting Sofie's Giving Page to support cancer research and care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund.
June 2nd started out like any lazy Sunday. Sofie spent the day playing with her three month old sister and practiced riding her brand new bike, a gift from daddy on her 3rd birthday. Dinner was a little late that day because we had friends over. Sofie was enjoying her favorite chocolate donut when she felt sudden and intense pain in her stomach. We immediately took to the ER where soon after, she was diagnosed with Diffuse Anaplastic Wilms, a rare and life threatening cancer that originates in the kidney.
This type of cancer is very hard to treat and there are several protocols used across the USA and around the world to attempt a cure. Fortunately Sofie was treated at the Dana-Farber institute which has been leading groundbreaking research in pediatric cancers including Wilms for over 60 years. Her team created a protocol that differed from the national standard. It was a lot more aggressive but also promised better outcome.
Now a year on, Sofie is almost 4 and cancer free. For her 4th birthday, we want other children like Sofie to have a second chance at life. So in lieu of gifts, please consider making a donation to this wonderful institute that has became our support system and extended family.
A little bit more about pediatric cancer
Pediatric cancer is the leading cause of death in children. But, only four percent of the National Cancer Institute budget is currently dedicated to pediatric cancer research. Consequently, the FDA has approved only 2 drugs for childhood cancer in the past 20 years and half of the drugs used to treat children are almost 25+ years old.
Why Dana-Farber?
At Dana-Farber, there are over 70+ clinical trials available for pediatric patients to improve clinical outcomes. Groundbreaking research done here results in treatment options available at other cancer institutes in USA and beyond. Whether its a child in Africa, Pakistan, or elsewhere in the world, your contribution will have a global impact in the fight against childhood cancer.
