WHY WE'RE FUNDRAISING WITH THE JIMMY FUND WALK TO FIGHT CANCER

By participating in the 2020 Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk: Your Way presented by Hyundai, our team is making every step count toward the ultimate finish line: a world without cancer!

We call our team BRCA1 Strong because so many members of our family have the BRCA1 gene, passed down from our parents and grandparent, and some of us have passed it on to our own children. Team members Paula and June are both breast cancer survivors who are current or former Dana Farber patients. One of our daughters (Paula's late daughter Sarah) had her breast cancer diagnosed at the Dana at the age of 33 and two other daughters who tested positive for the gene have recently had prophylactic mastectomies to hopefully avoid what there moms went through.

Our Aunt Rita Guthrie passed away from breast cancer, as did her daughters Denise and Mary (though not necessarily carrying BRCA1). Other cousins have had breast cancer and survived, undergoing surgeries, chemo, radiation, and other physical and emotional challenges. Some family members keep a watchful eye on their own BRCA1 determination.

That's why raising funds for the Dana Farber is so important to us, especially in this Covid-19 time when donations to support doctors, patients, and researchers there are so important.

Your support goes directly to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s unique 50-50 balance between cutting-edge science and highly compassionate care. Funds raised through the Jimmy Fund Walk enable Dana-Farber leaders to enhance programs and initiatives that serve pediatric and adult patients and their families.

Thank you for joining us and supporting our team in the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk. We hope you can walk with us (in person, socially distanced at North Beach in Hampton, NH, on October 4, or virtually with us). And, if you can't walk and fundraise yourself, please consider a donation to one of our team members, like Paula's granddaughter MacKenzie, who has been a Young Pacesetter but is determined to reach the adult goal now that she's 14!

Together, we can conquer cancer!

Thanks!
