WHY WE'RE FUNDRAISING WITH THE JIMMY FUND WALK TO FIGHT CANCER

Team Darby has been participating in the Jimmy Fund Walk since 2013 in memory of their dear friend, daughter, and sister, Darby Stott. Darby was re-diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in May 2013 and set up her team to recruit friends and family to participate with her. “At that first walk, none of us could have imagined how Team Darby would grow and become such a large part of Darby's legacy,” Karen Fogerty, Team Darby co-captain, writes.

“Darby wanted to give back to Dana-Farber because the people there had done so much for her,” Patrick Sansonetti, Team Darby co-captain. “Not just the care they provided, but also the support she needed. She was such a great friend, so supporting a cause that she was so passionate about was an easy decision.” Unfortunately, Darby passed away in 2014, just a few weeks before the Jimmy Fund Walk that year. “We walked the entire marathon route wearing bright pink ‘Team Darby’ t-shirts,” Marcia Lee Taylor, Team Darby co-captain, writes. “So many people along the course stopped us to express their condolences…it was an incredibly emotional day.”

Although Darby passed away in 2014, devoted family and friends have continued to walk in her honor each year, raising $121,326 in 2020 to push their 8-year total past an incredible $1 million mark. They are the 12th Walk team to achieve this milestone achievement in the event's 32-year history.

“Team Darby is a collection of people that Darby touched at various times and in various places in her life. High school and college friends, neighbors, former colleagues, family,” Kevin O’Connor, Team Darby co-captain, writes. “Darby was such a thoughtful, generous, and caring person, and Team Darby is a reflection of that.” By bringing together so many people, the team now represents Darby’s legacy and commitment to both philanthropy and friendship. Team members are spread out between Hopkinton, Holliston, Osterville, Newton, California, Washington D.C., New Hampshire, and Rhode Island.

“Darby was passionate about raising money for cancer research—specifically to find better treatments for metastatic breast cancer,” the team writes. “It was so important to us to be able to continue the tremendous work that Darby started.”

“Team Darby’s enthusiasm, passion, and energy exemplify the unique spirit of this event,” said Zack Blackburn, Director, Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk. “Team Darby is a prime example of a team who has dedicated their time to conquering cancer and supporting high-level research at Dana-Farber, despite the unique circumstances of the past year. Even though the pandemic altered the world, Team Darby’s commitment to conquering cancer remained as steady as ever through their involvement with the Jimmy Fund.”
