I am participating in the 2019 Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk presented by Hyundai, taking steps toward the ultimate finish line: a world without cancer!
As many of you know, my mom was diagnosed with bronchioloalveolar carcinoma (BAC) in January 2012. An uncommon lung cancer that primarily affects non-smoking women, my family was taken aback by this life altering news. However, for those of you who knew my mother, she was not going to take this diagnosis lying down. We immediately started treatment at Dana-Farber, seeking the brightest minds in the field at a renowned cancer institute in our backyard.
My mum endured several different chemotherapy options and clinical trials. In December 2012 we were told the devastating news that there were no other treatment options available for my mother. We spent the next four months spending as much time together as humanly possible. The outpouring of generosity that we saw (from many of you!) still brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it. From daily dinner deliveries, to a Christmas decorating flash mob, to nightly games of Yahtzee (in which I am still the reining champ), to quiet lunch/nap dates, it was truly humbling to see how many other people loved my mother, and my family, as much as I did.
On April 22, 2013 my mother passed away peacefully in her sleep, and our lives haven’t been the same since. There is not a day that goes by that we don’t think or talk about her, or bring up a joke or mention a family trip. Her physical presence is missed beyond words, but I can’t help but smile when I see her in each one of us. From my Dad’s love of adventure and DIY-projects, to my brother’s thoughtful nature and sheer brilliance, to my own busy bee tendencies and love of cooking/baking and taking care of the boys, I smile every time I see a bit of Cindy Loo in each of us.
We honor and celebrate my mom every year by fundraising in the Jimmy Fund Walk and raising funds for lung cancer research. Thank you in advance for any support you can offer! It means more than you know!
