September is OVARIAN CANCER MONTH so lace up your walking shoes and join or donate to the Ovarian Cancer Brigade on September 23rd in the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk. Be a part of the great strides in progress to overcome this dreaded disease. We’ve raised close to $420,000 in the past 7 years hoping to achieve $500K!
Each year, approximately 22,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the United States and about 15,000 American women die from the disease. These numbers are underscored by the sobering fact that currently there is no reliable screening test for the early detection of ovarian cancer. The majority of cases (81%) are not diagnosed until the disease is advanced, at which time a woman's survival is significantly compromised. A woman's lifetime risk of developing ovarian cancer is 1 in 71 and the risk of dying from this disease is 1 in 95. OVARIAN CANCER BRIGADE'S goal is to raise $60K for research which will be directed to The Dr. Ursula Matulonis Ovarian Cancer Research Fund at Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Dr. Matulonis is dedicated to research, early detection, quality of life and ultimately and ideally-- a cure for ovarian cancer which if caught early enough is a highly treatable disease.
