Covid greetings and salutations to you, the greater Zach’s Pack Nation!!
There have been many times in the last few months when I wondered if writing this note was the best idea. I wondered if “doing the walk” was the best idea. I wondered if you, the donors, were in a place in which you could support, or if you would just find me over-reaching, by sending out this letter. Then I thought about my friends and some old students of mine who are currently fighting cancer. I thought a lot about those current patients and came to the decision that, ultimately, cancer has not stopped for COVID so why would I stop?
This year’s Jimmy Fund Walk will be a “Walk Your Way Walk” in which the participants’ walk course is relative to their home area and more “virtual” in its essence. There will be no water stops… There will be no med tents… There will be no snacks along the way, or motivational signs, or orange slice guys on Heartbreak Hill. There will be no party at the finish line. This year will be about walking to just walk. To remember those who are fighting cancer, even among these COVID days. To remember those who have lost their battle against cancer. To raise money in the fight against cancer.
With that realization, I am excited to let you know that though the COVID has managed to end the idea of an actual sanctioned and supported physical walk this year, I will be walking the route of the Boston Marathon for the 23rd time, this October 3rd and also 4th! Without all the official supports in place along the course, it is smarter and safer for me to break this into two days of a shorter walk; but in the end I will still make the marathon effort. We will move closer to our goal of $1,000,000 by surpassing the $800,000 mark and 23 year effort by the end of the walk.
I am also excited to share with you all that this survivor of 24 years turned 50 years old this March. With the Covid shutting down the country just days after my50th birthday, I decided that I was going to “flatten my [own] curve” while I was locked down this spring. The success of this personal effort is that I am 30lbs lighter than I was in March, so I am in the best walk shape I have been in in many years!!
