Dear Friends and Family:
This is the fifth year we will walk with our daughter, Allie, a Cancer survivor, and raise money in support of the wonderful cancer care and research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. This June marked the sixth anniversary of Allie’s remission from Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (“A.L.L.”). As many of you are aware, she was diagnosed with this deadly illness as a 27 year-old in May, 2015 and had to undergo a grueling two-year regimen of chemotherapy in order to recover. We will never forget the wonderful care she received from her Oncologist, Dr. Dan DeAngelo, and her equally amazing medical team at Dana-Farber throughout this very difficult two years. There were several life-threatening complications and many hospitalizations, but each crisis was handled confidently, expertly and compassionately - we never felt alone.
Allie was the beneficiary of a protocol that had been developed in a clinical trial led by Dr. DeAngelo, a renowned blood cancer expert. This protocol is now the basis of treatment for young adults facing her form of Leukemia throughout the US and World. We never forget what it was like to live through such an unimaginable ordeal and feel duty-bound to support those who are presently living with cancer. We will forever be grateful to DFCI for giving us our daughter back. Walking and raising money, 100% of which will benefit patient care and the groundbreaking research at Dana-Farber, is one way we can give back.
Although the Walk, to be held on October 3, 2021, will again, sadly, be virtual, our Team, like many others, will join up and walk together in Boston to commemorate this meaningful event. You may wonder why you should donate to a Cancer center in Boston. But, in addition to supporting us and honoring Allie, your contribution benefits all of us. DFCI is the setting not only for excellent patient care, but also groundbreaking cancer research. As I mentioned above, the protocol developed by Allie’s Oncologist is now being used for young adult A.L.L. patients the world-over. And many cancer patients are alive today as a result of findings by Dana-Farber researchers. In our time at Dana-Farber, we met patients from all over the US and many other countries participating in clinical trials and receiving treatment. Many types of cancers are essentially being treated as chronic illnesses as a result of these breakthroughs, and Dana-Farber researchers have contributed greatly to new and expanding areas of cancer treatments, including Immunotherapy.
Most of us have been impacted by cancer in some way and it benefits everybody to fund major cancer centers like Dana-Farber that offer wonderful patient care and do critical research into the causes and cures of all types of cancer. The need is even greater under these difficult circumstances. Like many other large institutions, Dana- Farber has lost millions of dollars as a result of the Pandemic, but people continue to get cancer and to need the world-class treatment and compassionate care they offer. We are humbly asking for donations to our 10/3/21 Jimmy Fund Walk in honor of Allie. Over the last four years, Allie’s Team, The Acute Lymphomaniacs, has raised over $85,000 to benefit patient care and research at Dana-Farber. The thousands of individuals that have participated in The Jimmy Fund Walk over that period have raised over 30 million dollars towards the same goals.
The Jimmy Fund Walk is one of the important fundraising tools that DFCI relies upon to fund its work. Your donation is tax deductible and will advance the fight against cancer. Let's work together to eradicate cancer! Any support, no matter how small, will be most appreciated. We are so grateful for your continued support!!!
