Dear cancer battle buddies:
Cancer is silent, nasty, devious. We who are sentenced, look ‘so good’ to others. Truth is, our outside matches our inside. The subtle hollowing of cheeks. Skin decorated by camouflaged pustules. The tremor that never leaves the background of our consciousness, imagination drawn to the dankest crevices of despair. We smile, joke, try to act normal. Some days, it seems we’re winning. Most days, we accept the rouge cells are patient, posed to ambush the unaware. I have too many friends who fight the physical and emotional effects of tumors and treatment. This is for you who understand temporary vacations, the release that is an illusion. Know you are stronger and braver than ever imagined. I love you all.
