Thank you for visiting my Jimmy Fund Walk home page!
I am proud to raise funds for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute for the third consecutive year as my way of "paying it forward" for families, like mine, who unexpectedly are affected by cancer.
February 24, 2016, is a day that changed everything for my family. My daughter, Annie, was diagnosed with an extremely aggressive form of breast cancer - triple negative - at the young age of 29. We were shocked and devastated. We have no family history of breast cancer and Annie had always been very healthy. The next few days - or should I say daze - were filled with doctor appointments and tests....and tests and tests. Our journey to DFCI was merely to get a second opinion/confirmation of the diagnosis. We weren't going to that "big factory", in the heart of Boston, being just another number or another trial.
How wrong we were.
From the moment we met our oncologist, Dr. Anne Partridge, and our surgeon, Dr. Peggy Duggan, we knew Dana-Farber was where Annie had to take her treatment. As Dr. Duggan put it, "its what we do". And they do it well. Sure, it's big from the outside, but inside is compassionate, caring, professional, and reassuring. Annie was put on a breast cancer drug trial that we truly believed was responsible for her successful treatment. She would not have had access to this trial treatment at another facility. This is the reason I walk. It is my hope that other families will benefit as we did from the research trials and treatments that my fundraising helps to support. I don't want any parent to receive that phone call saying "Your daughter needs you- you need to get to Boston".
Annie and I first raised funds in the 2016 Jimmy Fund Walk - one day after her final chemo treatment. I was amazed at her strength and resolve. The finish line was symbolic of so many things that we had experienced throughout her treatment. You want to see emotional!!!
Last year was our first half marathon - Annie's choice - on the Boston Marathon route, and we will repeat that route again this year. We walk as part of the Young and Strong Team - a program that Dr. Partridge began to connect young women with breast cancer with other young women breast cancer survivors. Watching these "younger than me" women transition from patient to survivor to mentor, all in the prime of their young lives, is truly an amazing experience!
