I am participating in the 2020 Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk: Your Way, taking virtual steps toward the ultimate finish line: a world without cancer!
In February 2016, my daughter Annie was diagnosed with one of the most invasive, aggressive forms of breast cancer - at the young age of 29. Our family had no history of breast cancer and we were devastated.
The next two weeks were a whirlwind of tests, doctor appointments, tears, questions, fears, learning about Triple Negative Cancer and hours of waiting. And waiting. Our appointed oncologist at Annie's local hospital agreed with our decision to get a second opinion and suggested Dr. Ann Partridge at Dana-Farber. We were reluctant to go to "the cancer factory" - yet it became the best decision we made.
Our family 100% gives all credit to DFCI for saving Annie's life.
November marks the "4 year anniversary" of Annie's last treatment. We are waiting for the magical 5-year mark. She continues to be monitored every 6 months with a battery of tests. A day does not go by that I am not thankful for the care, treatment, and experience that DF gave us.
COVID has changed the look of our walk this year - what a surprise! Annie and I are mapping out a Half Marathon route to walk in Andover, MA. We plan to walk it on October 4th - the original walk date. We will miss supporting other walkers who are beginning their cancer story, those who are struggling, those who have conquered cancer, and those who have lost loved ones and continue to raise awareness through memories. But our reason for walking remains the same: Let's wipe out cancer through science.
I realize that this is a tough year to ask for donations - and I appreciate any gift regardless of size. When you make a gift to my walk, you’re directly supporting Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s unique 50-50 balance between cutting-edge science and highly compassionate cancer care. Your support allows Dana-Farber leaders to enhance programs and initiatives that serve pediatric and adult patients and their families.
Thank you for supporting my participation in the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk.
