It is so hard to believe that ten months have flown by since my 2018 Jimmy Fund Marathon Walk, 26.2 miles, 11 hours and 40 minutes taking 69,186 steps toward the ultimate finish line: a world without cancer! My day was emotionally charged and physically challenging, one I will never forget.
The goal for 2019 goal is to raise $9,000,000 by 9,000 dedicated walkers. So you guessed it, I am in once again walking in Graham's honor, he is my hero!!! This year Team #grahamstrong is going to try raising an ambitious $10,000. I am hoping to receive your generous support. When you make a gift to my walk, you’re directly supporting Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s unique 50-50 balance between cutting-edge science and highly compassionate cancer care. Your support allows Dana-Farber leaders to enhance programs and initiatives that serve pediatric and adult patients and their families.
I am officially starting to fundraise. During the summer we are having an opportunity drawing for a gift basket valued at $100 of our honey, soap and candle products at the West River Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings. During the week tickets may be purchased at Peoples United Bank in Londonderry. Tickets are $10 or 3 for $25. the winner will be chosen at the end of the Farmer's Market in Londonderry on Saturday of Labor Day weekend. The basket can be shipped to the winner if need be.
Anyone donating $100 or more online will automatically be entered into a drawing for a cast silver Tree of Life necklace valued at $150. To help deal with my anxiety I designed and handcrafted the necklace in February 2018 while Graham was courageously undergoing his 7 weeks of aggressive proton radiation treatments.
For our third fundraising event, we hosted at our home in Weston an afternoon of "Open Gardens" from 3pm to 7pm on Sunday, August 18, 2019. Donors wandered our berry patches, veggie and perennial gardens while snacking on hors d'oeuvres donated from our awesome area restaurants and Farmer's Market vendors. Fabulous Wines from Spain and Vermont were donated for us to enjoy. There was also a silent aution supported by many generous local businesses. We raised an total of $3553 that afternoon!!!!
Graham has been asked to be a Walk Hero this year. He will be honored along the Boston Marathon route at the #2 mile marker along with 51 other courageous patients of all ages. I get all chocked up just thinking about this as I was so overwhelmed last year by all the stories posted along the Walk. At the end of May Graham turned 12 and had a third MRI with no evidence of disease. YEAH!!!!This is what we have been praying and hoping for, a huge milestone, one that was certainly a faint glimmer of hope 20 months ago. Graham has attended school and is playing his beloved baseball and swimming. He is learning all over again how to be his best as his life is embracing increased normalcy. His next MRI is scheduled for August 26th.
Thank you for supporting my participation in the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk. Together, we can conquer cancer! The 2019 Walk is scheduled for Sunday, September 22nd. My feet will hit the ground at 5 am.
With Gratitude, Carol
