Warm greetings from Dr. Apple A Day.
Right off the bat, this is a request to ask you to support me in a virtual walk on October 4 to benefit the Jimmy Fund
at Dana-Farber. The request is for a somewhat bizarre and quirky walk, fully consistent with these bizarre times.
In addition to everything that is happening, this year cancer took front and center stage again for me with the recurrence of my sister’s cancer earlier in the year. She has finished chemo and is about to embark on a series of surgeries at the end of which, a recurrence of cancer is hopefully unlikely.
Cancer research and treatment has made great strides but like most research, has been seriously impacted by the virus, one of the reasons I feel compelled to do some fundraising. Research done by one center, institute or hospital is certainly shared and thus benefits many more people than Dana-Farber patients only.
For a number of years, I have not officially done the walk. My clown partner, Earl, and I have entertained patients, families and other walkers outside Dana-Farber and then set out with them on a 5K walk from the Institute to Copley Square in Boston. This year, the walk has been cancelled and walkers are invited to do a virtual walk of their choice. I’ve decided to fundraise for the 5K and do a walk, although it certainly is not one that follows the traditional Boston Marathon route.
Now for the bizarre part, my choice of walk – I am, after all, a clown: Since the beginning of the pandemic, I have been walking daily to a video on YouTube, Walk at Home with Leslie Sansone
. It has been a life-saver in terms of exercising while confined, and also lots of fun. For the virtual Jimmy Fund Walk, I will be doing Leslie’s 5K walk instead of my daily 2-mile walk. I hope to be able to walk 10K but for now, my goal is 5K. This is the link to the YouTube walk I will be doing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDmqv_XMouA
I worked at Dana-Farber for many years and have clowned there for the past 15 years and know, first hand and especially from patients, that it is an outstanding cancer center. Please consider supporting my “walk” with any amount you are comfortable with. No dollar amount is too small but please do not feel obliged to donate.
If you would rather donate by mail, please send your donation to:

Dr. Apple A Day thanks you for considering supporting my walk – and perhaps even walking along with me to the video.
