I am one of the lucky survivors; I had colon cancer in 2011 and had a recurrence in 2012. Since then I have been cancer free. Others are not so lucky. My mother was diagnosed with liver cancer in March 2013 and died less than a year later. My uncle died a year after my mom from colon cancer.
In late summer of 2016, Gina Sweeney (one of my college roommates) was diagnosed with liver cancer and died that December. The world is a less vibrant place without Gina's laughter, creativity, art and empathy. Gina was one of my loudest cheerleaders during my battle with cancer and I think that my inability to help her similarly really hit me hard. So I walk to honor Gina and to raise money for research to cure, and develop more effective treatments for, cancer.
By participating in the 2020 Boston Marathon(R) Jimmy Fund Walk: Your Way presented by Hyundai, Team Gina is taking steps toward the ultimate finish line: a world without cancer!
When you make a gift to my walk, you're directly supporting Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's unique 50-50 balance between cutting-edge science and highly compassionate cancer care.
