I am participating in this year's 2019 Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk and will start my journey in Hopkinton and walk 26.2 miles to the finish line.
As many of you know, I have been a volunteer for nearly 2 years at Dana Farber providing patient care by means of transportation, food service, distributing complimentary Red Sox tickets and hand massages. Volunteering has been a profoundly rewarding experience for me. I decided to volunteer. so that I could give of myself to patients and families in need, but I leave every day aware that the patients give so much more to me as I witness their strength, perseverance, faith and hope. Their attitudes and outlooks leave me wanting to do more and that is why I am walking on behalf of those patients that have made me more keenly mindful of what is important in life.
I have heard patients' and families' discuss their challenging experiences as well as their overwhelming gratitude for Dana Farber and how it is incomparable in terms of its quality of care and constant compassion. Each and every one of them is extraordinarily appreciative. Patients travel from all over the world to come to Dana Farber in Boston because of its unparalleled reputation and success. So on September 22nd, I too will be traveling from Hopkinton to Boston with the support of those who support my journey through a contribution to the Jimmy Fund.
During last year's walk, I got stung by a bee on the back of my leg at mile 7, and it swelled up to the point where I could barely walk. I visited every first aid station along the way seeking relief which never came, yet I dragged my foot the remaining 19 miles. I was one of the last to finish, arriving 11 hours after I started. What kept me going was realizing how incomparable my unexpected experience that day was when compared to those patients who have cancer. I could not stop because of those patients with whom I have made acquaintances. I firmly believe that through our support of Dana Farber, we will make tremendous progress in the coming years in the battle against this horrible disease that affects so many of our friends and family.
Thank you for supporting my participation in the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk. Together, we can conquer cancer!
