Dear Family and Friends,
It’s hard to believe that another year has passed since I last wrote you. I hope you and your family have had a good and healthy year. I am reaching out to you today because I am participating in the 2022 Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk and I look forward to your support. This year the Walk will be held in person on the Boston Marathon Route on Sunday, October 2, 2022. I am so looking forward to the energy, excitement, experience and support for Dana-Farber that the Walk provides!
Throughout the year, many of us have known friends or family members who have been touched by cancer in one of its many forms. The sad truth is that about one in three people will develop cancer over their lifetime and one in five will die from it. Thanks to early detection and improving treatments, the death rate from cancer is dropping although the number of cases is expected to rise due in part to aging populations. The fact remains that the effect on the patients and those left behind can be overwhelming. This year, our family has felt the loss experienced by a close friend whose older brother succumbed to pancreatic cancer and family members who have been fighting their own battles with cancer.
Our family remains very grateful because my husband Stuart, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and underwent surgery and chemotherapy in 2018 continues to be cancer-free. Every six months he goes to Dana-Farber for checkups to monitor his bloodwork and scans. We cannot emphasize enough our indebtedness to his doctors and the entire staff at Dana-Farber who have continued to support us with expert care delivered in a compassionate manner through every step of his journey. Dana-Farber has also provided genetic counseling that may help our children prevent future cancers as more research is conducted on the effects of the genetic mutations BRCA1 and BRCA2. We feel so fortunate to have this amazing resource available to our family and to the greater community. Dana-Farber continues to provide support, information, research, treatment, and HOPE for cancer patients and their family and friends!
When you contribute to my walk, your support goes directly to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s unique 50-50 balance between cutting-edge science and supportive patient care. Funds raised through the Jimmy Fund Walk enable the Dana-Farber staff to enhance programs and initiatives that serve pediatric and adult patients and their families.
So, once again I ask you to please join me in continuing the fight against cancer by considering a contribution towards my fundraising efforts.
