We will walk in memory of our Dad

My sister Deanne and I are participating in the 2022 Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk presented by Hyundai, taking steps toward the ultimate finish line: a world without cancer. This will be our third walk, and we are tributing it to our Dad, Dennis.  This year, October 1, 2022, marks his 10 year anniversary of when we said good bye to our Dad at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Our Dad received 2 stem cell transplants during the many years he was Ill with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. In 2008 he received his first transplant. With the help of some experimental medications his team of doctors were able to harvest enough of his own cells to make his transplant a success. He was given 3 years of remission and was able to live a fun filled life with those he loved, he traveled and was even able to play many rounds of golf. Unfortunately though, his cancer came back and in 2011 he opted for a second transplant, this one was a donation from a gentleman from Australia. His second transplant was also successful and he was considered to be in remission for his second time. As careful as my dad was and his family was, he got sick with pneumonia. In August of 2012, (weekend of my mom’s birthday), my dad was admitted in to Brigham and Women’s Hospital where he spent the last 6 weeks of his life, fighting for his life. My dad received exceptional care at Dana Farber/Brigham and Women’s, with that we are thankful.

My dad was 69 years old when he passed,  weeks shy of his 70th birthday and a few weeks shy of my mom and dad’s 45th wedding anniversary. He had a lot of life left in him if it weren’t for his unfortunate diagnosis many years before. While yes, he was able to enjoy many years of his life  it wasn’t without worry, discomfort and even pain. Our Dad worked hard his whole life and he even did while in treatment. He was very good at masking his discomfort and made the best out of his days and life. It’s hard to believe that our dad has been gone for nearing 10 years. On October 2, 2022 Dee and I will walk 26 miles with pride and love for our dearly missed Dad, and also for those who are loved and are affected by cancer.

“He had the heart that cared completely. He had the smile that brought so much pleasure. He had love that brought joy beyond measure.”
