I am participating in the 2020 Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk presented by Hyundai, taking steps toward the ultimate finish line: a world without cancer!
When you make a gift to my walk, you’re directly supporting Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s unique 50-50 balance between cutting-edge science and highly compassionate cancer care. Your support allows Dana-Farber leaders to enhance programs and initiatives that serve pediatric and adult patients and their families.
Joe's Story: My father, Joe, was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer in April of 2018. He fought his battle to cancer with optimism, hope, and determination for a year and a half before passing away in November of 2019, leaving his legacy behind with my mother, my three younger siblings, my aunt, my grandfather, and me.
During my father’s treatment, my family was so fortunate to have received indescribably extraordinary help and support that was given by the Dana-Farber institute, specifically the one in Milford, MA. My father's team of Doctors and Nurses not only provided my father with multiple plans of treatment with the most revolutionized medical knowledge and expertise, but provided such with the utmost kindness and compassion. I remember my dad recalling that the first words his primary doctor ever spoke to him were "we are going to do our best to help you get better". My mother even said that every single time she and my father walked through the hospital doors, there was never once an occasion where they were not greeted with a warm welcome and a smile. The people are not only incredibly skilled in all aspects of their line of work with both medicine and interpersonal relations, they are incredibly dedicated and persistent as well. Whenever treatment A failed, there were always back up plans with treatments B, C, and D. These doctors gave my father the hope that he needed, and the hope that my family needed as well. To us, these doctors are our heroes, they are angels; and their actions are of those that I can say with confidence that my family and I will be forever grateful for.
My father's story and our family's experience with the Dana-Farber institute is one of thousands; and far more common than one would presume. That is why I am presenting this fundraiser before you all today. This year, my team, Sullivan StongER, has designated colon cancer to be the recipient of the funds that we raise while participating in the Jimmy Fund Walk. The funds raised will go 50% towards research and 50% towards funding patient care so that people like my father can receive the chance at hope they are beyond deserving of, while receiving the incredible patient care provided by the staff at Dana-Farber similar to how he did. The goal is fairly large, but even the smallest contributions can make the biggest difference!
Thank you for supporting my participation in the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk. Together, we can conquer cancer!
