My name is Cam Jones, I am going into my senior year at Beverly High School and I am participating in the 2020 Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk on October 4th. My goal when I started fundraising was to raise $100 before the walk, after quickly reaching and surpassing my goal, I changed it to $500. Now about three weeks into fundraising I raised it to $1,000 and I am excited to see how much I could raise for this wonderful cause. 100% of the proceeds I make will be sent to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
In 2012, President Obama officially dedicated the month of September to “Childhood Cancer Awareness Month”. Over 15,000 children per year are diagnosed with pediatric cancer in the US.
In the middle of December, 2012, 6 year old Riley Fessenden was diagnosed with an extremely rare nasal cancer and was told that she wouldn't make it to Christmas. Riley continued to battle her illness everyday for the next 3 years with a smile on her face and hope in her heart. Riley touched the entire city of Beverly and many surrounding cities and has left an impact on all of us still to this day. On July 20th, 2016, Riley lost her battle with cancer at the age of 9.
I am participating in this walk to do my part in making a change in pediatric cancer research. After meeting with Riley's family and educating myself on the topic, I have learned that my aspirations of finding a cure are extremely far from impossible. The Jimmy Fund and Dana Farber Cancer Institute have made a huge impact on Riley's life during the years she battled cancer. Less than 4% of the federal budget for cancer research is dedicated to childhood cancer. In 20 years the FDA has only approved of 4 drugs for any childhood cancer.
If you decide to make a gift to my walk, you’re directly supporting Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s unique 50-50 balance between cutting-edge science and highly compassionate cancer care. Your support allows Dana-Farber leaders to enhance programs and initiatives that serve pediatric and adult patients and their families. All proceeds will be directly donated to the cause.
Thank you for supporting me and my participation in the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk, together I believe we are moving in the right direction to discovering possible cures to conquer cancer.
