I Walk for My Survivor Sister Susan - To Find a Cure for Pancreatic Cancer

I am participating in the 2022 Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk on Oct 2nd, 2022, with the PurpleStriders team, the National Team for Pancreatic Cancer.  Honoring my sister, Susan and a tribute to Aretha Franklin, the queen of soul.  Who knew Ms. Franklin had pan can?  Not many knew and Susan never thought she would be this pickle fighting this disease.

Her strong and passionate story:

What started out as presumed gallstones in her common bile duct turned into Stage 4 pancreatic cancer.  Large pancreas head mass with liver metastasis. Susan, a nurse practitioner, had a lot to learn and quickly.

She went to see Dr. Krishnamurthi at The Cleveland Clinic, who came highly recommended, and they were right. She is the bomb.  Susan sat in her office by herself, holding back tears and fear as she gave her the facts about her disease and options. Asked her "What if I do nothing?", she turned to look at Susan straight in the eye, "5 to 6 months." Oh such frightening words. The chemotherapy protocol was explained as "tough”, we don't offer it to everyone, you don't have any choice Susan your tumor is large."  Needing to think about it, she got up and walked out. Dr. Krishnamurthi shouted out, "You don't have much time to think about it Susan. You need to get started ASAP."

Never a quitter and she wasn't going to start now. Then the whirlwind started: GI and oncology appointments, biopsies, port placement and the dreaded palliative care appointment. "Have you thought about dying Susan?" he asked. "Well I guess I am now", she answered. True fondness and love have grown for her palliative care doctor.

Now 19 months later and her pancreas tumor went from a "large" (no dimensions needed) to barely seen on CT scan,  1/4 liver metastasis gone and the rest have shrunk.

Her journey has been tough, she has met so many great people who have provided exceptional care, knowledge and courage. The support from family, friends and coworkers has been overwhelming. The team at the Moll Cancer center with The Cleveland Clinic has been so good to her.  She'll miss them when she’s gone.

Pancreatic cancer affects few in cancer numbers but kills many. There have been small strides in genetic therapy, pancreatic cancer screening and new chemotherapy protocols. We need your help in battling this disease. As Aretha Franklin would say, "Think" and "Ain't No Way" we can fight this without your generous support.

When you make a gift to my Walk, you’re directly supporting Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s unique 50-50 balance between cutting-edge research and compassionate patient care.

Thank you for listening and donating!
