On October 2, 2022, I will be participating in the Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk with the Gastrointestinal Oncology Team at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
The Jimmy Fund is a charity organization dedicated to funding the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. 100% of the money raised from this event will go towards cutting-edge cancer research and compassionate patient care.
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States. Unfortunately, the high prevalence of this disease means that most people know a “Jimmy”-- a loved one who is battling cancer. The “Jimmy” in my personal life is my grandmother, who was recently diagnosed with lung cancer. The work done at Dana-Farber is critical to helping patients like her.
This summer, as a Gastrointestinal Oncology Intern at Dana-Farber, I have the privilege of researching young-onset colorectal cancer. Although colorectal cancer is commonly believed to only affect older patients, more and more people under the age of 50 are getting this disease. Legendary actor Chadwick Boseman was sadly someone who passed away from young-onset colon cancer. He was only 43.
I am walking for my grandmother, for young-onset colorectal cancer patients and their families, and for the countless others in my community who have been affected by cancer. I hope you will consider donating to this important cause. Any amount makes a difference!
Gratefully,
Natalie Pan
