WHY WE'RE FUNDRAISING WITH THE JIMMY FUND WALK TO FIGHT CANCER

757 days. Our lives were rocked 757 days ago when the word “Leukemia” entered our daily vocabulary. Alongside a slew of other medical terms, prescriptions, procedures, side effects, and an endless army of doctors and nurses, our warrior Payton has battled every one of those 757 days to get to today. Her last dose of chemotherapy. The last time she will have this medicine that kills off as many good cells as bad ones. The last time we have to worry about blood counts and fevers and nausea and side effects that she is too young to articulate and remember.

Through it all, every one of those 757 days, Payton has shown us strength, tolerance, bravery, and triumph. She didn’t complain when we had to sit still, hooked up to IVs, for 4-6 hours at a time. She didn’t complain having to spend nights away from her siblings, in a loud and disruptive hospital, getting woken up by strangers poking and prodding her without an explanation. She didn’t complain when we shaved her head because the medication was causing her hair to fall out. She didn’t complain when she had to take 5 different medications at a time or when she had bone marrow samples taken or injections directly into her spinal fluid.

She is inspiring. She is fierce. She is a warrior. We are thankful for every one of those 757 days, and every one of the days we have ahead. On this day, we thank all of you that supported us and sent prayers and positive thoughts, all of the doctors and nurses at Boston Children’s Hospital and the Jimmy Fund Clinic that worked tirelessly for us, our visiting nurse that feels like extended family now, and all the support staff that spent countless hours ensuring that our family had everything we needed to get to this day in one piece. Thankful that our other kids were patient and compassionate when Payton’s appointments messed up plans or her inpatient treatments kept them apart. Grateful doesn’t seem a big enough word.

Cancer was tough, but Payton was tougher.

Your support of our campaign goes directly to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s unique 50-50 balance between cutting-edge research and compassionate patient care.
