WHY WE'RE FUNDRAISING WITH THE JIMMY FUND WALK TO FIGHT CANCER

Hello,

Hope everyone had a wonderful summer and happy start to the new school year! My hero started middle school last week - he is not thrilled about waking up really early for middle school but he still loves school.

Like last year, I have signed up to do the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk - the full marathon distance (26.2 miles) - to raise funds for fighting cancer. I started training on Memorial Day weekend but I'm late setting up this page.

Earlier this summer we decided it was finally time for us to go on the Disney trip to celebrate Shravan completing his treatment. It would be our first vacation since Shravan got diagnosed in 2018. Shravan fell sick during our last vacation and soon after we came home we got the worst news of our lives. Needless to say, I was correlating vacation with Shravan's sickness, but I was also very excited to finally go on the vacation we all needed so much. I wanted to mention our trip on this page so I figured I will wait until after our vacation. I am happy to say that we went on the trip and had a blast. The universe had some tricks to play on us though - we all got Covid right after our return from Disney despite diligent mask wearing. Luckily, everyone but me had mild symptoms and we have all recovered at this point.

More great news - we have a new member in our family - our sweet puppy Diya! (The puppy we promised Shravan during his long dueling hospital stay.) We brought her home the day before my Jimmy Fund walk last year. She's now a year old and we cannot imagine a life without her.

We also hit another milestone - it's been 4 years since Shravan was diagnosed. Four years since our new normal started! It seems like yesterday and like a life time all at once. Everything is going per plan from the cancer perspective but he's still on treatment for some severe side effects from the treatment. Earlier this year he had to go through multiple procedures to ensure that his steroid induced Glaucoma & sustained high spinal pressure is not a risk for his vision. I wish Shravan didn't have to go through this or at least that he was the last kid ever to be diagnosed with cancer. Unfortunately my wish still seems a ways off from coming true. Recently, I learned of a couple of kids in town who were diagnosed with aggressive forms of cancer.  There are thousands of children around the world who are being diagnosed every day, and whose families struggle to find a new normal while fighting this horrible disease.

I will continue this fight as long as I live and do as much as I can to raise funds to fight this disease. For a lot of kids like Shravan, the challenges continue long after the treatment is complete. I really appreciate your aid in our quest to support critical research that will find cure and safer treatment options for all cancers. Please help me raise the funds our healthcare professionals need to reach that goal. Thank you,

Gomathi (Shravan's mom)
