In January of 2022, Anya was diagnosed with osteosarcoma- a rare and aggressive bone cancer. She was 7-years old and prior to diagnosis had complained of a mildly sore leg. We entered an emotional rollercoaster consisting of 9-months of intensive chemotherapy through the Jimmy Fund, weeks at the hospital, frequent ER visits, a major lung surgery, and a unique leg amputation called rotationplasty. They removed Anya’s knee and reattached her shin to her thigh with her foot backwards so that her ankle can act as her new knee in a prosthetic. She finished chemotherapy just in time to start second grade and celebrate her 8th birthday.
About a month after finishing treatment, Anya participated in the Jimmy Fund walk. She had to relearn to walk using her prosthetic and was determined to stand up and walk herself across that finish line. We’re excited to bring Team Anya together again this year and Anya will once again be honored as a Jimmy Fund hero with a picture of her being placed at one of the mile markers.
Your support of Team Anya will go directly toward funding the osteosarcoma research of Dr. Katherine Janeway- Anya’s oncologist and one of the nations lead researchers fighting this disease. Dr. Janeway specifically looks at treatments for recurrent metastatic osteosarcoma. Anya has a 30-50% chance of relapse and so we are very aware that this research may one day save her life. God willing, the cancer will stay away forever and Anya will not personally need this research but we know that many children do. 90% of the Team Anya funds will go directly to Dr. Janeway’s research and the remaining 10% will go into a generalized research fund at Dana Farber used to support the most promising research in the fight against pediatric cancer.
Please come join us on October 1st. We’ll have a group walking the 10k and the half marathon but you can always sign up with us and still do the 5k, full marathon or virtual routes. If you are not able to walk with us in person, please consider donating to any individual on Team Anya or to the team as a whole (it’ll all go to the same important place).
With deep, heartfelt gratitude!
