Happy end of summer everyone! Hope everyone is doing well. Our family is doing okay! We had a busy and fun summer. We traveled back home to visit family after 6 long years. It was a wonderful trip, one we all needed.
Shravan is doing well. He will start 7th grade this week! I can't believe he's 12 now. He still loves Marvel superheroes, continues to spend all our money on Legos every chance he gets and is still crazy about Pokemon. And he is still on medication for the side effects from the treatment although they have just started weaning him off one of the meds after 5 years.
5 years! On August 15, 2023 - Arun and I crossed the 5 year anniversary of the worst day of our lives as parents. In a very weird way, it seems just like yesterday and a like a lifetime ago all at once. I wish Shravan didn't have to go through all the pain, suffering and a few lifelong complications. I wish Srivas (Shravan's older brother) didn't have to "grow up" to be the biggest strength that Arun and I had at 10 years old. I wish we didn't have this 'new normal', where I still can't think past more than one or two weeks in the future. I realize I have no control to change anything that happened. But it is not all bad.
Looking back at the last five years - I am thankful that this illness brought our family closer than ever before. I am thankful for the countless number of times we were the recipients of random acts of kindness from family, friends, our community and even strangers. Most of all, I am thankful to the excellent medical team that gave my little hero a second chance at life. I am forever grateful to the tireless efforts of doctors, nurses and researchers whose work gives so many families the second chance they deserve. This life saving work needs funds and I will do my small part in helping raise those funds. Team Shravan will be walking the full 26.2 miles at the Jimmy Fund Walk on October 1st. This is our third year participating in this wonderful event. Please support my fundraising efforts if you can for kids like Shravan and anyone impacted by this terrible disease. Thank you!
