Grief. Loss. Sadness. Anger. Loneliness. Rage. Confusion. All valid, all present for us when Liz died from neuroendocrine tumor cancer. Love. Generosity. Presence. Connection. Integrity. Strength. Hugs. Determination. Tenderness. Caring. Softness. Honesty. All real, all very present in how Liz lived.
How can we get more of the things Liz brought to our lives and maybe just a little less of the things that showed up when we lost her? Grief doesn't disappear, it doesn't evaporate like smoke, it is always with us. How can we grow and develop as better people alongside our grief, in partnership with it if you will? How? We know that is what Liz would not just want for us but expect from us because that is what we saw her do right alongside her NET diagnosis. She stared it in the face and said "Watch me beat you!" And if becoming a more present wife, mother, sister, aunt, friend is winning then she did it, she kicked Cancer's ass!!
In 2014 Liz created Zebra Diva's just a few years after she was diagnosed with NET. Our team has walked every year since. Keeping the team going has been a labor of love. We have had up to 35 people walking in support of Liz's plan to bring awareness to NET, to raise money for prevention, treatment, research and to find a cure. To date Liz and her team have raised $232,000.00. We plan on keeping Zebra Divas up and running. We hope to keep raising money, gaining new members and educating people about NET.
Being honest, longevity of a memorial walk is hard. If we don't bring that to the forefront of this conversation, we risk the team petering out over time. We don't want that. So here we are sharing our struggle and our fears out in the open to release them and replace that with the support and determination of Liz's people. Liz's family and friends, together we can continue her work and build on the beautiful team she created and see her hope and prayer come to be.
