Our team grew out of the friendship between two men, Jonathan M. Wainwright and Dr. Peter V. Corea, who understood the vastness of cancer but like most of us, thought it another person’s disease. Every Saturday for nearly ten years, Jonathan and Peter played chess. They both realized it was not the game that was important but the friendship they shared. In 1996, Jonathan was diagnosed with cancer and lost his battle in October of 1999. With Dr. Corea’s encouragement, a Jimmy Fund Walk Team was formed in memory of Jonathan. Less than two years later, Dr. Corea was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma and lost his battle with the disease in November of 2001.
A “Tree of Life” was the result of team member ideas and has been the motivation for fund-raising for the Jimmy Fund over the years. The leaves represent those who have died as a result of cancer, cancer patients and cancer survivors. The flowers symbolize the hope for cancer research success that will benefit future generations.
Tens of thousands of adults and children are diagnosed with lymphoma every year. Much improvement has been made in the diagnosis and treatment, which have improved the long-term outlook for many lymphoma patients; however, we have a long way to go before we can say, “Lymphoma is a disease of the past.”
The Lymphoma Program at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute provides comprehensive, high-quality care for patients with lymphoid malignancies. Each patient’s care combines the best treatments currently available for specific lymphoid tumors with innovative new therapies based on research underway in the program’s laboratories and elsewhere. In memory of Jonathan and Peter, we are designating the funds we raise to this program.
