WHY WE'RE FUNDRAISING WITH THE JIMMY FUND WALK TO FIGHT CANCER

Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumors (AT/RT) of the brain/central nervous system are extremely rare and incredibly difficult to treat. AT/RT strikes children, normally under the age of three but we know of cases from birth through early 20s. While more children have survived Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumors in the last few years, this disease remains a tremendous challenge to families and oncologists, with the overall survival from this deadly cancer remaining low, too low.

The small number of children diagnosed yearly (20-30 per year in the United States) make it almost impossible to acquire grant money for research. Research funds are raised by families and their supportive communities through efforts such as participating in the Boston Marathon jimmy Fund Walk. 100% of your donation to our walk team will go to this fund and research.

The “Cure AT/RT Now” Fund at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute was created by families affected by AT/RT. The fund exists to support the AT/RT research work of doctors at Dana Farber. The Jimmy Fund Clinic researchers and clinicians are improving knowledge and treatment of AT/RT through cutting edge research and consultation with experts from across the globe. Recent breakthroughs in AT/RT research show that the genetic mutation that causes AT/RT is part of the same group of genes that triggers 20 percent of all human cancers. That includes common lung, esophageal, pancreatic, kidney, liver, ovarian, bladder, skin and blood cancers. Supporting this research not only benefits those battling AT/RT, but the 20% of cancers.

Your donation to our team will ensure continued progress towards finding effective treatments -- and one day a cure - for this terrible cancer. On behalf of the children who have battled AT/RT, and the families that battle alongside them - we thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

The Cure AT/RT Now
