WHY WE'RE FUNDRAISING WITH THE JIMMY FUND WALK TO FIGHT CANCER

On July 29, 2023, our daughter Calista was diagnosed with B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Shock, Devastation, and Fear are words that we use to describe the moments we were told her diagnosis. Our lives turned upside down in an instant.

After presenting with a low grade fever for over a week, experiencing severe lower back pain, stomach pain, and swollen lymph nodes that led to her inability to lift her arms, lab work at Boston Children’s Hospital confirmed her diagnosis. She was admitted immediately from the Emergency Room to the Oncology Floor.

Calista remained in the hospital for 29 days until her cancer was in remission. She underwent bone marrow biopsies, multiple lumbar punctures, and intense chemotherapy treatment. With treatment came many “pokes” or blood draws, side affects of treatment, coupled with not being able to leave the hospital, go outside, being away from her brothers: Caleb, Calen & Calex, family, and friends, the loss of her hair~ her physical, mental, and emotional limits were pushed to boundaries no child should ever have to endure.

Watching her navigate these challenges, day in and day out, make her a hero, our hero. She pushed through every hurdle with dignity and grace while inpatient. We thank her brothers who supported her through those tough days (and those she fights today).

Once we were able to return home, we were left to care for her without 24/7 care. In addition to the needs of our sons. A daunting and scary task.

However, after becoming a part of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute /Jimmy Fund Clinic, for her continued two year treatment plan, our anxiety eased. Dana-Farber Cancer Institute/Jimmy Fund Clinic provides a place of safety and compassion during the most difficult days. Not only are the patients supported, but siblings and parents too. Dana-Farber Cancer Institute/Jimmy Fund Clinic provides a level of care that is exceptional and it is with that that make it stand above the rest.

While there, Calista is able to enjoy crafts, video gaming, movies, themed weeks, snacks/meals, movies, games, music and more. All elements of care are covered. She/We have built trust in those around us with staff, nurses, doctors, clinical assistants, social workers, and child life specialists. We appreciate the knowledge of those who surround us there, as well as the opportunities it has provided to us and our family.

With that,

We walk for her.

We walk for others.

We walk for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute/Jimmy Fund to defy cancer.
