Sapna Syngal, MD, MPH, is Professor of
Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Director of Research for the Center for
Cancer Genetics and Prevention at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI), and
Founder of the new DFCI Lynch Syndrome Center. The major focus of Dr. Syngal's
career has been the development of research, clinical, and training programs
focusing on the genetics, screening, and prevention of gastrointestinal
cancers. In 1995, Dr. Syngal founded the Gastrointestinal (GI) Cancer Genetics
and Prevention Program at Dana-Farber, which has since become an international
model for early detection and prevention of inherited GI cancers. Dr. Syngal
works with patients and their families to identify cancer risk, particularly
for those with rare genetic disorders including Lynch syndrome, Familial
Adenomatous Polyposis, and hereditary pancreatic cancer, while also overseeing
major clinical drug trials studying the protective effect of medications in
preventing GI malignancies and discovering new cancer-causing genes.
Dana-Farber is unique among cancer institutions in that its mission and budget
are evenly divided between cutting-edge research and patient care. Dr. Syngal's
research focuses on increasing awareness of inherited cancer risk so that
individuals who have greater risk have the opportunity for increased screening,
with the goal of preventing cancer in each and every individual with a genetic
predisposition to cancer. As cancer genetics and prevention research
initiatives grow and NIH and NCI funding decreases, the Institute increasingly
relies heavily on private support. Private support fills this funding gap for
genetic screening and research and provides seed funding to test hypotheses and
bring promising studies far enough along to attract federal support.
