I just turned 13 years old. In Judaism, this marks my becoming a Bar Mitzvah, which is the ritual that signifies that I am ready to participate within the Jewish community as an adult. To represent this milestone, I have decided to take on a project that will raise money for the Jimmy Fund and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in memory of our close family friend, Miles Steven Goldberg.
Like I am now, Miles was only 13 years old when he passed away in 2017. For my Bar Mitzvah project, I want to honor Miles’ life and our memories of him and let his family know how much they mean to me and my family - especially his brother Louis who is both a best friend and like a brother to me. My goal is to raise at least $1000 for each of Miles’ 13 years and for each mile I plan to run in The Covered Bridges Half Marathon in June in Pomfret, Vermont (https://cbhm.com/).
The Jimmy Fund solely supports Boston's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, raising funds for adult and pediatric cancer care and research to improve the chances of survival for cancer patients around the world. Since its founding in 1948, the Jimmy Fund has raised millions of dollars through thousands of community fundraising events. Miles received important services and care at the Dana Farber Clinic through the support of the Jimmy Fund; I have seen firsthand how impactful their work is and I am excited to invite you to join me in raising money for this important cause.
Please join me in celebrating Miles’ memory by donating to my project. I know my fundraising goal might seem ambitious, and it is ok if I don’t reach it, but it would be very meaningful if you would consider helping me try to achieve it and if by chance, we go beyond it- that would be amazing!
Please consider sending this link to at least 3 other people: family, friends, coworkers, community members anyone you might think would like to participate. All contributions are tax deductible and will go directly to Dana Farber and the Jimmy Fund; Donations of any amount are welcome and appreciated- no amount is too small and no amount is too large.
UPDATE 2.4.19: We made it to the initial goal of at least $13,000! I know it was an ambitious goal but with the help of many generous donors (thank you again!), we hit it in less than 3 weeks! As a result, I am going to raise my goal to $16,000 AND will keep raising it if I can; there is no such thing as too much money for cancer research. If you haven't had a chance to donate yet, please do. Please continue to share this link with family and friends in your communities with the hope that they too will want to contribute. The work of Dana-Farber and The Jimmy Fund is very important and I know that our final donation will help a lot of people. Thank you!
UPDATE 5.28.19: We hit $16,000! I am again raising my goal, this time to $18,000. Please know that you can still contribute toward this effort. So, why am I running as a member of the Dana-Farber Run-Any-Race-2019 team? I am running to remember Miles, I am running to support Louis and the rest of the Goldberg Family and anyone whose life has been affected by cancer, and I am running to raise money to support Dana-Farber's mission of providing "expert, compassionate care to children and adults with cancer while advancing the understanding, diagnosis, treatment, cure, and prevention of cancer and related diseases". Let's do this!
UPDATE 6.2.19: We can't believe it, but the half marathon is here. Will is in Vermont and excited for this morning’s events. I am writing this on his behalf as he readies himself to run.
Thank you to all of you who gave so generously to his efforts already- together you have raised nearly $17,000!!! Will started with what he thought was a crazy goal of $13,000 but before he knew it, he hit that, and then hit $15,000 (!) and then $16,000 (!) in record time. He has now set his goal to at least $18,000, which is a significant number in Judaism, as 18 corresponds to the alphabetic letters that compose the Hebrew word "Chai" which means "Life" (that's why we say L'Chaim when we toast- it means "To Life!").
Later this morning, Will will be running to celebrate Miles' life- a life that was cut too short, but one well lived and one that touched many other lives. He will also be running to support the lives of Miles’ friends and family who will forever face the loss and grief of losing someone so special. And, he will be running to support Dana Farber Cancer Institute’s and The Jimmy Fund's mission of saving LIVES through important research, services, and treatments for people facing cancer. If you haven't had a chance to give yet, please consider doing so. ANY AMOUNT is helpful whether it be one dollar, five dollars, ten dollars, thirteen dollars or more. And, please feel free to share his link with anyone you think might like to contribute. All donations are tax deductible and go directly to supporting the work of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and The Jimmy Fund.
Dassie Ramsay (on behalf of Will)
UPDATE 6.7.19: Will has hit his goal of at least $18,000 but it is still not too late to contribute and be a part of this effort. The more money raised, means more money to support all that The Dana Farber Cancer Institute and The Jimmy Fund do toward conquering cancer. Please continue to give in whatever amount you can. Thank you!
