WHY WE'RE FUNDRAISING WITH THE JIMMY FUND WALK TO FIGHT CANCER

Thank you for visiting the giving page for the Bruce Gilboard Family Fund. As many of you know, June will mark 6 years since Bruce was diagnosed with an EGFR mutant lung cancer and was treated at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute until he passed with dignity and surrounded by love in December 2019. In gratitude of the interdisciplinary team that cared for Bruce, our family has made a substantial gift to establish a fund in his name to enhance psychosocial and palliative care for patients in Dana-Farber’s new EGFR clinic.

We have been humbled by the outpouring of donations to the Bruce Gilboard Family Fund over the last year and wanted to share the update below on the impact of your generous support. We invite you to continue this journey with us by making a contribution in honor of Bruce and our first grandson, Blake Harley this Father’s Day. Blake arrived in April and Bruce would be smitten with him.

FUND UPDATE: 2021

Inspired and informed by Bruce’s patient experience, The Fund is enabling Dana-Farber to create an innovative pilot program aimed at reducing patient and caregiver distress by increasing access to patient / family supportive care for patients with a thoracic cancer diagnosis and the unique needs and complications associated with treatments for EGFR mutant lung cancer. The Fund has catalyzed a partnership between thoracic oncologists in the Chen-Huang Center for EGFR Mutant Lung Cancers with interdisciplinary staff from the Department of Psychosocial Oncology and Palliative Care, including key members of Bruce’s supportive care team: Kate Lally, MD (palliative care), Michelle Jacobo, PhD (psychology), and Suzanne O’Regan (social work). Thanks to the Bruce Gilboard Family Fund and your support, staff across thoracic oncology and supportive care departments have created a new way to collaborate with patients and families focused on four key principles: support, educate, connect and empower.  For example, since February, psychosocial and palliative care clinicians are participating in weekly meetings with oncologists to review patient cases in the EFGR clinic and identify strategies to alleviate distress and improve quality of life. They are also testing a new support group model focused on educating patients and their loved ones about their disease and fostering a sense of community amongst patients with the same diagnosis. From the very start, Bruce wanted to confront his diagnosis on his own terms. This expert team was instrumental in helping Bruce to cope with his diagnosis, improve his quality of life by managing his pain and side-effects of therapy, and, ultimately, prepare him and us for his final days and our family’s transition to bereavement.

We are proud of the work underway to implement this novel program and grateful for the role you are playing to bring it to fruition. The ultimate goal is to create a model of care that can become standard for many types of cancers that cause serious illness. In honor of Bruce’s legacy and all patients suffering from cancer, we hope you will be inspired this Father’s Day to help us in raising $75,000 to bring the fund to over $300,000 and ensure that all patients who are eligible can participate and be given the same chance at driving the outcome of their care like Bruce.

Thank you for your generosity and Go Easy.
