Susan Pernice is our team's guiding light, but each year, unfortunately, I also have another reason to walk. This year, I have two.
My best friend's husband, Steve, has had surgery, chemo, radiation, and other treatments. He's cancer free (yay!) and working to stay that way. I like to think it's people like us, and those who came before, who funded so much great research that it helped in his treatment.
My other reason would like to stay anonymous, but if you know me…you know. She and her husband came to cheer us on the year it was so hot I thought I was going to melt! I wasn’t really civil, but she didn’t mind and never held it against me. That’s friendship! She is now battling with all she has to beat cancer. It's not an easy journey; it's painful, terrifying, and, just plain awful. She's a complete warrior, and, even through all of this, she radiates positive energy and gratitude. I'm in awe of her, I learn from her nearly every day, and I'm so fortunate to be her friend.
When you make a gift to my walk, you’re directly supporting Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s unique 50-50 balance between cutting-edge science and highly compassionate cancer care. Your support allows Dana-Farber leaders to enhance programs and initiatives that serve pediatric and adult patients and their families.
Thank you for supporting my walk this year. It means so much. This year I walk for Steve, for my treasured friend, for every cancer warrior's name on the back of my bib number....and always for Susan.
Together, we can conquer cancer! F-Cancer!
