WHY I'M FUNDRAISING FOR THE JIMMY FUND
Shortly after my 25th birthday, as an otherwise healthy, happy, and active young woman, I was diagnosed with a rare (~1 in 1,000,000) cancer called synovial sarcoma. While my case can be successfully treated using the standard of care, we are in dire need of treatments for metastatic disease, which is often lethal. Fortunately, scientists have identified the unique genetic cause of synovial sarcoma, and amazing researchers just around the corner from me in Boston are translating these findings into potentially transformative therapeutics. Science has the power to change lives, but only when properly funded. Unfortunately, research funding, especially for rare diseases, is extremely limited.
Dr. Cigall Kadoch, an Associate Professor of Pediatric Oncology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School, Affiliate Faculty of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Biology at Harvard Medical School, and Institute Member and Epigenomics Program Co-Director at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard Science, made key discoveries linking the hallmark synovial sarcoma chromosomal translocation to abnormal cellular proliferation and tumor development. Today, her lab continues to make breakthrough discoveries into, and identify potential therapeutic targets against, the molecular and cellular underpinnings of synovial sarcoma. Dr. Kadoch's translational discoveries led her to found Foghorn Therapeutics, a Cambridge-based biotech company currently advancing a targeted therapeutic for synovial sarcoma to the clinic (!!!). I am so incredibly grateful for the opportunity to support her work. All funds raised will support research in Dr. Cigall Kadoch’s lab at Dana Farber. Together, we can make a real difference for patients with synovial sarcoma!
