A little over a year ago, a week after his 14th birthday, Mac was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma. It put us on a journey that no child should have to endure, or parent should have to hold and witness. Today, Mac is in remission and gave me permission to share his story. He hates the spotlight, but when I told him why I wanted to talk about his cancer he agreed. Team Despereaux is participating in the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk to raise money and awareness for pediatric cancer care and research.
Mac is a strong, humble warrior. His treatment was brutal. It ravaged his body. It violated his spirit. We’ve got to do better. We're forever indebted to his caregivers at Dana Farber and the Jimmy Fund, who are kind and smart and gentle with their patients and caregivers.
