In 2016, just four months after running my first marathon, I became a patient at Dana-Farber for cervical cancer. As shocking as it was, the calm in the storm was the incredible care I received there.
One of the core values at DF is to relieve the burden of disease now and in the future through their research, clinical care, education, outreach and advocacy.
This core value is why I'm taking on this enormous challenge of raising more money than I could have ever imagined. Dana-Farber is a beacon of hope for so many. Both my Dad and Father-in-law are patients and survivors. As many of you know, this last year was dedicated to seeing Andy's Aunt Nancy through her terminal ovarian cancer diagnosis. We spent a lot of time together at both the Boston and Chestnut Hill locations. During her hospitalization in May, we talked about the Boston Marathon, and she asked me to run for her, so others may be spared of this cruel disease.
My best running friend, Wendy Moran was diagnosed with breast cancer in early 2023. Throughout her treatment at Dana-Farber, we continued to set goals and move forward. Sometimes the steps felt heavy, but we always had hope. Now, we'll run the 129th Boston Marathon together, for the Dana-Farber team and give back as living proof that their work is vital.
For the numerous personal friends who are currently seeking treatment for various cancers: each mile, you are on my mind and in my heart. This is for all of you.
While I continue to be a fierce advocate for the prevention of cancer, Dana-Farber is an amazing place to have if the unimaginable becomes your reality.
One hundred percent of every dollar raised by the DFMC team supports the Claudia Adams Barr Program in Innovative Basic Cancer Research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. These funds are fueling some of today's most promising basic cancer research.
Thank you for your support! And so, the road to the 129th Boston Marathon begins...
