I am participating in the 2022 Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk presented by Hyundai, taking steps toward the ultimate finish line: a world without cancer
My daughter, Annie was shockingly diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer - one of the most invasive, aggressive forms of the disease - in February 2016. Our family was devastated not only because of the diagnosis, but because we have no history of breast cancer in our family. How could this happen to a young, strong and healthy very young woman?
We scheduled a second opinion at Dana Farber Cancer Institute with oncologist Dr. Ann Partridge - a world-recognized expert in young women’s breast cancer. We really didn’t want to take treatment at DF - too big, a cancer factory, we’re just a number - but figured it was in Annie’s backyard, so why not? We were so wrong. Both of us were totally impressed with the personal attention, the comfortable atmosphere and the incredible staff and patient support. Once we met Dr. Partridge our fate was sealed.
After an aggressive trial chemotherapy treatment, followed by surgery, another round of chemo and finally radiation, Annie completed her treatment 10 months after diagnosis. We credit the trial chemotherapy with saving her life. We support Dana Farber with our Jimmy Fund Walk every year with hopes that other families, like ours, will have the opportunity to benefit from the world class research and incredible care that we so greatly benefitted from.
Last November, Annie reached the magical 5 year cancer-free milestone! Her and her husband, Terrell, welcomed baby Trace in June of 2021 - our little miracle baby.
Cancer brings extreme highs and extreme lows. Every 6 months brings a new set of tests, entering “that world” again, holding your breath until results come back clean. We had our first set back early this summer. It’s amazing how all the feelings you thought were under control and in the past all unravel again with one phone call. We are in the midst of continued testing and have fingers crossed that all will be clear by our Jimmy Fund Walk. I find myself once again so very thankful that we are at Dana Farber.
When you make a gift to my Walk, you’re directly supporting Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s unique 50-50 balance between cutting-edge research and compassionate patient care. Your support allows Dana-Farber leaders to enhance programs and initiatives that serve pediatric and adult patients and their families.
Thank you for supporting my 2022 walk. As we say, Together We Can Defy Cancer.
Lots of love,
