I am one again lacing up my sneakers to participate in the 2022 Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk presented by Hyundai, taking steps toward the ultimate finish line: a world without cancer.
On November 28, 2017, our son, Kyle called to tell us that our then 10-year-old grandson, Graham, had been diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a nasty pediatric brain tumor. It was like I was kicked in the stomach and my heart shattered all in a flash of time.
The odds for Graham were not great, and I felt helpless, but then I heard about the Jimmy Fund Walk. I instantly knew that this was what I had been looking for: a way to be a part of the solution. I never dreamt of walking a marathon, but I was determined to do it. This will be my fifth Walk and I am excited to be hopefully back on the Boston Marathon route along with 7,500 other participants hoping to raise $7.8 million. I loved walking in Weston the past two years but I will not miss all the steep hills on the back roads I walked, it was a challenge.
I walk as the sole member of Team #grahamstrong, and I cherish the meditative day it gifts me. I walk at my own body’s pace and it takes me just under 12 hours to complete the 26.2-mile journey. I will continue to walk and support the Jimmy Fund for years to come it is so very near and dear to my heart.
I am eternally grateful to the life Dana-Farber has restored to Graham, and I am a firm believer and lover of science and all its mysteries. As of June 2022, Graham’s scan showed no evidence of disease or recurrence. How great is that?! Even though our mountain has not completely vanished, it sits to the side of our lives instead of blocking our path forward.
When you make a gift to my Walk, you’re directly supporting Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s unique 50-50 balance between cutting-edge research and compassionate patient care. Your support allows Dana-Farber leaders to enhance programs and initiatives that serve pediatric and adult patients and their families.
Thank you for supporting my Jimmy Fund Walk fundraising efforts. Together, we can defy cancer!
